Compared to typical wood screws, decking screws have increased shear and pullout strength. This comes from the larger thread diameter and lower threads per inch. They are self-tapping and can often be driven without pre-drilling pilot holes, reducing installation time. But pilot holes may be needed for very hard woods to prevent splitting. Some decking screws have ribs under the heads to increase gripping power.

Correct length is important - too short won't grip enough threads, too long can poke through the bottom. 2-3x the thickness of the top board is a good guideline.
